Director of Counseling & Health Services

The Director of Counseling provides strategic leadership, clinical oversight, and administrative management for the College’s Counseling Department while promoting a culture of care, compassion, respect, and accountability that directly aligns with the institutional mission. The Director is responsible for ensuring high-quality, student-centered mental health care that supports the holistic wellbeing, academic success, and personal development of both undergraduate and graduate students. The Director of Counseling reports directly to the Rogers-Ingram Vice President for Justice and Community Wellbeing.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Departmental Staff and/or Graduate-Level Interns
Employment Status: 10-month, full-time

  • Ensure the delivery of ethical, evidence-based, and culturally competent counseling and crisis intervention services for all enrolled students
  • Provide strategic leadership, clinical oversight, and administrative management for the Counseling Department to include policy development, budget oversight, and supervision of contract clinicians, professional staff, and graduate-level interns
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate departmental goals, policies, and procedures consistent with best practices and relevant professional standards (e.g. APA, ACA, NASW)
  • Oversee compliance with all relevant federal, state, and institutional policies to include HIPPA and FERPA
  • Collect and analyze data to evaluate utilization, outcomes, and satisfaction
  • Collaborate with offices within the Justice and Community Wellbeing (JCW) Division – Accessible Education, PresbyFirst+, and Jacobs Scholars – to provide reasonable and appropriate supportive services
  • Work in partnership with campus departments such as Student Conduct, Residence Life, Academic Success, International Programs, Athletics, Campus Safety, and Spiritual Life as well as the Graduate Programs to support student wellbeing, crisis response, and mental health education
  • Partner with faculty, staff and students to identify and support students of concern and promote early intervention
  • Offer professional development opportunities for faculty, staff, and students on student mental health and crisis response
  • Serve on institutional committees related but not limited to student mental wellbeing, risk management and emergency preparedness
  • Collaborate with local community agencies as needed to provide educational and preventative programming on topics such as Alcohol Awareness, Stress Management, Sexual Awareness, Suicide Prevention and Holistic Health
  • Participate in professional organizations, conferences, campus committees, meetings, or activities in order to stay current with national trends, research, and best practices relating to college mental health, and student wellness
  • Participate actively and willingly as a team player within the Justice and Community Wellbeing Division to ensure the physical and mental health needs of all students remain in the forefront of all decision-making processes
  • Assume other duties as assigned
  • Minimum education: Doctorate (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in Counseling, Clinical Psychology or Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, or a related mental health discipline
  • Current South Carolina license to practice as a Psychologist, LPC, LISW, LCSW or LMHCC
  • Must be able to supervise graduate-level students seeking LPC or LMSW
  • Minimum experience: Two or more years of clinical experience in a higher education setting with at least two years of supervision experience
  • Commitment to student success, with particular focus on mental health, resilience, and stress management. Familiarity with high-impact practice in higher education settings preferred
  • Knowledge of college student development theory, integrated wellness models, and best practices in holistic student care
  • Expertise in crisis management, threat and suicide assessments, and campus-wide wellness initiatives
  • Ability to think critically and analyze problems quickly and effectively
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and to organize for completion of different tasks
  • Ability to present effectively, particularly in designing materials and sharing information orally to a variety of audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to use computer technology, including Microsoft Office Suite, student information systems (Banner/Ellucian preferred), Google tools (email, calendar, drive, and forms), Titanium or other counseling-related data management system, etc. with some preferred social media platform experience
  • Ability to maintain confidential information and workflow
