‘Threads of Time’ features traditional paintings and contemporary ceramics from the Wofford College Art Collection

Presbyterian College’s Harper Gallery is presenting “Threads of Time: The Living Traditions of Korean Art,” an exhibition exploring Korean artistic traditions across generations and media.

The exhibition, on view through Nov. 21 in the Harper Center for the Arts, features a broad selection of works on loan from the Wofford College Art Collection. The pieces were selected by guest curator Dr. Youmi K. Efurd, museum curator at Wofford College’s Rosalind Sallenger Richardson Center for the Arts.

Works in the exhibition range from traditional Korean paintings to contemporary ceramics, offering visitors an opportunity to see both the continuity and evolution of Korean artistic expression.

Wofford’s Fine Arts Collection includes approximately 2,000 works and encompasses East Asian art as well as American Southern art, contemporary works and other holdings. Its Korean collection includes works dating from the 19th century to the present, including traditional paintings collected in South Korea during the 1970s and 1980s as well as more contemporary pieces.

Among the traditions represented in Wofford’s Korean holdings are minhwa, or Korean folk painting, landscapes, flora-and-fauna paintings, genre scenes and hunting imagery associated with the Joseon dynasty.

Efurd brings extensive academic and curatorial experience to the exhibition. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in art education from Korea University, a master’s degree in art history from the University of Georgia and a doctorate in the history of art from the University of Kansas.

“Threads of Time” reflects the ways artistic traditions can preserve cultural memory while continuing to develop through new materials, forms and generations of artists.

The exhibition is free and open to the public at Harper Gallery in the Harper Center for the Arts at Presbyterian College. It opened Sept. 10 and will remain on view through Nov. 21.
