The requirements for a major in history from PC allow students the freedom to pursue their own interests while ensuring that they receive instruction in certain key areas. To ensure a broad-based liberal arts experience, history majors minor in another field of study; many PC history majors pursue a double major, which enables them to gain mastery in more than one discipline.

Major in History

The major in history requires a total of 30 hours as follows:

  • HIST 2200-2201 (6): American History I and II
  • HIST 4000-4001 (6): Senior Seminar sequence
  • HIST course from European (34xx) offerings (3)
  • HIST course from Area Studies (36xx) offerings (3)
  • HIST electives at or above 2000-level (12)
  • A declared minor or double major in an approved area.

Students who seek honors in history must meet the college’s Honors Program eligibility requirements, take an additional 3 credit hours (HIST 4003), and complete a student-driven research project.

Minor in History

Students who minor in history must complete 18 hours in HIST electives taught at or above the 2000-level.

Major in History with a Minor in Secondary Education Certification to Teach High School Social Studies

To be certified to teach social studies in the high-school setting requires the completion of 82 hours as follows:

  • HIST 2200-2201 (6): American History I and II
  • HIST 4000-4001 (6): Senior Seminar sequence
  • HIST 2401 (3): Modern Europe
  • HIST 3240 (3): History of the South
  • HIST course from Area Studies (36xx) offerings (3)
