Additional Requirements of Music Majors

  • Recital Attendance every semester: Register for MUSC 1000 (0 sh) every term.
  • Diagnostic Exams: Diagnostic exams are administered to incoming students in keyboard and theory.
  • Applied Music: See catalog for more information regarding special fees for applied music lessons.
  • Piano Proficiency: Students should seek to satisfy the piano proficiency requirements no later than the end of the sophomore year.
  • Second-Year Review: At the end of the second year of applied study at PC, students will perform an extended jury with an interview with the faculty. Permission to continue with upper-level study and to perform public solo recitals is granted through this procedure.
  • Ensembles: Music majors must participate in a 1.0-hour ensemble every
    semester. Students will also select a minimum of four 0.5 semester hour ensembles for the major. The final semester of ensemble participation is waived for music education majors.
  • Competency in Music Technology: The department requires that students acquire a basic competency in music technology. A basic introduction to music tech is included in MUSC 1301 and 1302 and the use of notational and aural training software programs are required in music theory and musicianship classes. The use of recording technology and manipulation of audio files is required in applied experiences and in music history classes.

Minor in Music

The minor in music requires 22 hours, including

  • MUSC 1100, 1201, 1202, 1203, and 1204;
  • a minimum of six semesters of applied study in the student’s primary instrument in MUSC 1500;
  • a minimum of six ensemble hours; a minimum of four terms in MUSC 1000;
  • and additional hours from the following courses:
    • MUSC 1301, 1302, 1701, 1702, 1151, 2400, 2420, 2421, 2422, 2423, 2430, 3301, 3302, 3401, 3701, as many as two additional hours in MUSC 1500 or 1510, and as many as two additional hours in ensemble.
