Laurensville Female College

Laurens County is well known for two Presbyterian schools, Thornwell Home and Presbyterian College. There was another Presbyterian institution in the county, however, which predated both of these. This was the Laurensville Female College, located not in Clinton, but in Laurens. – Read More –

The College Seal and Motto

We recently ran across two Bluestocking articles detailing the history of the college seal, the familiar oval which contains the motto “Dum Vivimus Servimus” (“While we live, we serve”). The articles trace the seal back to the 1915 PacSac. As usual, while the facts were partially correct, they were not totally accurate, which proves once again the value of going back to the source. – Read More –

Record of Garden Successes and Failures: January

Rev. William Plumer Jacobs, fresh out of Columbia Seminary, arrived in Clinton in May of 1864. He was 22 years old, and had been hired as the first full-time pastor of the Clinton Presbyterian Church, now First Presbyterian Church, Clinton. The next year he married Mary Dillard, and by the time he was writing this garden notebook, he was living in his own home with his wife and two children, Florence and Ferdinand. – Read More –
