Robert M. Vance Lecture Series

The Robert M. Vance Lecture Series will take place on Tuesday, April 23 in Edmunds Hall at 6:30 p.m. This year’s lecture series speaker will be Norman Scarborough, the director of the utility analyst department at the S.C. Public Service Commission.

The Robert M. Vance Lecture Series on Business Ethics is funded by a generous gift from the Bailey Foundation and is named after the late Clinton, S.C. businessman.

Robert M. Vance considered ethics, honesty and integrity to be extremely important and lived these qualities as a business leader in Clinton, S.C. The Robert M. Vance Lecture Series on Business Ethics serves as an opportunity for business leaders to speak with PC students about how to run a successful business that maintains a moral code in which employees can take pride and use as a guide for day-to-day activities.

The program is a tribute to Mr. Vance’s legacy and his numerous contributions to the Clinton community. Each year, CEOs, presidents and other top managers address the topic of business ethics.

  • 2024 Robert M. Vance Lecture Series Speaker: Norman Scarborough

    Former South Carolina Professor of the Year Norman Scarborough is currently director of the Technical Analyst Department at the S.C. Public Service Commission.

    In 2021, Scarborough retired from Presbyterian College after 42 years of service as the William Henry Scott III Professor of Entrepreneurship, where he taught a diverse set of courses, ranging from business applications of Excel and business statistics to business law and entrepreneurship.

    He also has enjoyed a lengthy career as an author, having published many college textbooks that are used around the globe. One of his books, Essentials of Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management, remains one of the best-selling entrepreneurship textbooks in the world. He also was recognized for his teaching prowess, having been named
    the South Carolina Professor of the Year by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

    Scarborough earned his college degrees from Clemson University. After retiring, Scarborough changed gears and waded into the regulatory world of public utilities, including water and wastewater companies, natural gas companies, and electric utilities. He has discovered that he has been able to use much of what he taught as a professor in his current work.

    Scarborough is active in his community, having served and continuing to serve on numerous boards in non-profit and community-focused organizations. He also is active in his church. He has been married to his college sweetheart, Cindy, for nearly 40 years. When not working, he enjoys shooting sports and fly fishing.
