WHAT YOU’LL STUDY

The Africana studies minor is an interdisciplinary approach to studying the histories, politics and cultures of peoples of African origin in Africa and the African diaspora.

You can minor in Africana studies by successfully completing 18 hours of these courses ranging from political science to theater. Introduction to Africana Studies serves as a strong foundation to the minor, and you can choose to take one to four hours in a course devoted to a specific topic in Africana studies.

You may also choose to take African-American Art and Culture, African American Literature, and African American Theatre as you work on your minor.

Political science courses are also offered as part of the minor. You can choose from:

  • African-Americans and the Political System
  • African Politics
  • 3rd World Underdeveloped /Politics

You can also choose to take psychology and sociology courses for the Africana studies minor, including:

  • Social Psychology
  • Social Inequality
  • Race/Ethnic Relations
  • Social Movements

You’ll need to make at least a “C” in each course to earn a minor in Africana studies, although you might be allowed to make one “D.” The Department of Political Science may specify certain courses that you’ll need to make at least a “C” in, and you’ll need to make an overall average of “C” or better on all work presented for the minor.

You must take at least half of the hours required for the minor at PC. The Provost must approve any substitutions to the requirements of the Africana studies minor prior to completion of the amended requirement.

Speak with your advisor or the chair of the political science department about minimum grades allowed and any additional requirements for the Africana studies minor.
