WHAT YOU’LL STUDY

Want to learn about the history of art? You can minor in art history by successfully completing 18 hours of courses in art history.

You’ll build a foundation in your study of art history by taking two required courses: Survey of Western Art I and Survey of Western Art II.

You’ll complement what you learn in these courses by taking 12 hours of art history electives. You can choose any four of these three-hour courses:

  • Medieval Art and Architecture
  • Art in Italy, 1400-1700
  • Art in Northern Europe, 1400-1700
  • Art in Europe, 1700-1850
  • Art in Europe, 1850-1950
  • Art in the United States, 1900 to Present
  • African-American Art and Culture
  • Gender and Art
  • Modern Art Theory and Criticism
  • Word and Image
  • Topics in Latin American Art
  • Contemporary Art: Theory and Practices

You’ll need to make at least a “C” in each course to earn a minor in art history, although you might be allowed to make one “D.” The Department of Art may specify certain courses that you’ll need to make at least a “C” in, and you’ll need to make an overall average of “C” or better on all work presented for the minor.

You must take at least half of the hours required for the minor at PC. The Provost must approve any substitutions to the requirements of the art history minor prior to completion of the amended requirement.

Speak with your advisor or the chair of the art department about minimum grades allowed and any additional requirements for the art history minor.
