What you’ll study as a History Education Major
By majoring in history with a minor in secondary education, you come away with a solid foundation in history and the events that have shaped human civilizations. You also learn current methods and strategies for teaching in high school classrooms.
At PC, your history education program requires 82 hours of coursework. History courses make up 30 of those hours. During the first two years, you’ll take American History I and II, Modern Europe, and History of the South. You’ll choose one Area Studies course, such as Modern China and East Asia, or History of Mexico. Three elective courses allow you to study historical topics that interest you. The Senior Capstone sequence enables you to demonstrate your acquired skills in historical research, writing, and presentation. The program also includes courses in the social sciences, such as geography, psychology, and political science, that prepare you for the social studies curriculum offered in high schools.
The remaining 37 hours of coursework come from the secondary education curriculum. Lower-level courses include Introduction to Education as well as Teaching Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students. After your acceptance into the Teacher Education Program, you’ll take upper-level courses like Content Area Literacy and Introduction to Special Education. After a series of practicum experiences in local schools, you’ll conclude the program with student teaching during your final semester. By then, you should be little more than a Praxis test away from applying for your teaching credential.
