WHAT YOU’LL STUDY

The student-designed interdepartmental minor allows you to customize a minor that meets your needs and interests. If you’re interested in this option, you must first reach out to a faculty member in the field you’re interested in.

Courses required for the minor must come from more than one department or program.

The student-designed minor crosses the traditional divisions of academic study by including courses in different divisions and departments. The courses chosen for the minor are unified by a methodology and culminate in a capstone project that integrates your previous coursework.

A student with well-conceived academic objectives that cannot be achieved with an existing major or minor is eligible to apply to create a self-designed, interdisciplinary minor.

The student-designed minor will include at least 21 and no more than 24 credit hours. A faculty member, who will serve as the minor advisor, will help you develop the minor itself. The minor must be approved by the College’s Curriculum Committee.

The minor must match the rigor and scope of existing minor programs and create a plan of study that crosses at least two academic divisions and three departments to synthesize multiple bodies of knowledge.

The student-designed interdepartmental minor will culminate in a 1- to 3-hour directed study with the minor advisor. The study will include an integrating practicum experience, project, or paper planned by the student.

No more than two classes may overlap between the minor program and a student’s major. This option is limited to students who maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA. Proposals may be submitted after 45 credit hours have been earned. Proposals submitted after 90 credit hours will not be reviewed.

You’ll need to make at least a “C” in each course to earn a minor in student-designed interdepartmental minor, although you might be allowed to make one “D.” The department of the subject you’re mainly interested in may specify certain courses that you’ll need to make at least a “C” in, and you’ll need to make an overall average of “C” or better on all work presented for the minor.

You must take at least half of the hours required for the minor at PC. The Provost must approve any substitutions to the requirements of the student-designed interdepartmental minor prior to completion of the amended requirement.

Speak with your advisor about minimum grades allowed and any additional requirements for the student-designed interdepartmental minor.
