PC celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Elvia Pacheco will be the Hispanic Heritage Month speaker at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, in Edmunds Hall.

Presbyterian College is celebrating the contributions and culture of Hispanic people on and off campus during Hispanic Heritage Month.

Salsa Night – Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. in Springs
The college’s celebration begins with Salsa Night on Wednesday, Oct. 4, in the Springs Campus Center Great Room. The Pura Alegria Dance Company and Joel Rodriguez will kick off the event with a 45-minute salsa lesson at 6 p.m., followed by a two-hour dance party.

Guest speaker Elvia M. Pacheco will address the national Hispanic Heritage Month theme, “Latinos: Driving Prosperity, Power, and Progress in America,” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, in Edmunds Hall. Pacheco, the founder of LatinosUnited, an Upstate non-profit whose mission is to serve young Latinos in the area by promoting community involvement, self-empowerment, and education.”

Pacheco is a naturalized citizen who moved with her parents to the U.S. from Mexico before her first birthday. A proud product of both countries, her work focuses on integration and working with community members and partners to bridge the gap between English and Spanish-speaking groups.

A graduate of the University of South Carolina Upstate with a bachelor’s degree in communications and journalism, Pacheco also earned her Master of Business Administration from Strayer University. She is a recipient of the Riley Institute Upstate Leadership award and was named one of the 25 Most Beautiful Women in the Upstate and one of Greenville’s 50 Most Influential People, in addition to being named to the prestigious Best and Brightest Under 35 list.

PC’s celebration of HHM concludes on Saturday, Oct. 14, with a trip for students to see Mexico versus Ghana in a soccer match at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C.
