Presbyterian College alumnus Jeff Smith ’92 has returned to his alma mater as the new alumni engagement coordinator.

Smith, who previously served in PC’s Office of Advancement as a major gifts officer during the mid-2000s, said working with fellow alumni has always been on his career bucket list.

“This is something I’ve really wanted to do for a long time,” he said. “There is something I’ve always liked about the position – to be able to interact with our alumni. To me, it’s a great opportunity to promote the college and remind people why they love this place.”

Before starting his new role at PC, Smith worked in commercial insurance and later owned an Allstate agency in Clinton. He sold the business and moved his family to Virginia, where he worked in real estate.

All that time, however, Smith and his wife, Kim Holt Smith, a 1993 alumna, held on to their home in Clinton – perhaps hoping a path would be lit for his return to campus.

“It was like a perfect storm – the timing in our world and the timing for the position to be open,” he said. “It all came together at the right time.”

As a longtime Clinton resident, Smith also looks forward to engaging the local community.

“You know, we’ve seen the ebbs and flows of the college and the growth of the college,” he said. “Because of our closeness to the school, it’s an opportunity for us to be able to share what we enjoy about Clinton, about what we’ve seen over time.”

Smith brings even more connections to his fellow alumni. He is a former student-athlete who played for the Blue Hose Men’s Soccer Team. He participated in Greek life, Student Volunteer Services, and student government. He served on the Parents Council when one of his children was at PC.

“We’ve been able to see and connect with a lot of people who have made PC what it is,” Smith said. “So, to be able to tell that history and share that with people, and remind them of what made PC so special when they were here, it will be fun to remember with them and get them back to campus.”

Or bring a campus experience to them. The college has alumni chapters in Columbia, Charleston, Greenville, Atlanta, Charlotte, and Nashville – and is considering a seventh chapter in Washington, D.C. For alumni in the Charlotte area, PC is hosting a pre-game gathering from 4-6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Brickhouse Tavern prior to the Blue Hose game against Davidson.

“I’m excited about getting our alumni chapters going again,” Smith said. “I look forward to getting out into different communities and really bring PC front and center to our alums.”

Smith and his wife have two children – Mary Grace ’21, who works in admissions at PC, and Holt, a college freshman.
