Presbyterian College Chamber Orchestra to hold fall concert, Nov. 7

The Presbyterian College Chamber Orchestra will hold its fall concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, in Edmunds Hall.

The concert is free and open to the public.

Led by PC professor of music Dr. Richard Thomas, the concert will feature adjunct faculty member Ashley Horvat performing Violin Concerto No. 2 by classical music’s first composer of African descent, Joseph Bolgne Chevalier de Saint-George.

A native of Columbia, Horvat began studying violin at age three. She holds a master’s degree in violin performance from the University of Akron and earned her bachelor’s degree in violin performance from the North Carolina School of the Arts. Presently, she is the associate concertmaster of S.C. Philharmonic and acting principal second violin of the Spartanburg Philharmonic.

The fall concert will also feature the premiere of Thomas’ original “Song of the Andes.” Thomas, who teaches cello, bass, and chamber music, at PC, is also an adjunct instructor at the S.C. School of the Arts, Lander University, and an instructor for the Laurens County Academy of Music.

Thomas studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music, DePauw University, Temple University, the University of North Texas, and received a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of South Carolina.

Dr. Thomas has taught and performed in China, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Japan, Puerto Rico, Taiwan, Venezuela and throughout the U.S.
