Thursday, September 26, 2024 | 11:30 a.m.

There is a forecast of severe weather for Thursday and Friday, September 26 and 27. The National Weather Service is warning of the potential for heavy rain, flooding, wind gusts, and possible tornadoes associated with this storm system.

Severe Weather Preparation:

  • Charge your cell phone, laptop, or other important electronic devices before the weather arrives.
  • Monitor your PC email, PC official social media accounts, Rave Campus Alerts, and the local news stations for updates.
  • Stay up to date from trusted sources like the National Weather Service.

Heavy rainfall coupled with high winds may create hazards such as flooding and downed trees and power lines on Campus and the roadways leading to Campus. Please exercise good judgment and be safe should you decide to travel to and from Campus in these conditions.

Students on campus should continue to follow the direction of PC Residence Life staff. In an emergency, please contact Campus Police at 864-872-4050.

Flooding

Heavy rain can lead to flooding on streets and pooling water. While it’s safest to avoid driving during a storm, if necessary, proceed with extreme caution. Flooded roads can hide debris, and drivers may unknowingly enter deep water like canals or ponds. Standing water can also carry electrical currents from streetlights or power poles, posing a deadly shock risk.

Tornado Safety

If a Tornado Warning or a Tornado Watch is issued for the College’s location, and if time permits, an emergency text message and email relaying the weather alert will be transmitted through the Rave system and through any other means available at the time.

  • A Tornado Watch is issued when severe thunderstorms and tornadoes are possible in and near the watch area, it does not mean that they will occur. It only means they are possible.
  • A Tornado Warning is issued when a tornado is imminent. If a tornado warning is issued, seek safe shelter immediately.

If you are notified of a tornado warning, please follow these important safety items:

  • Take immediate shelter in corridors or hallways on the ground floor of buildings away from windows and, if possible, alert others to do the same.
  • Assist the handicapped in moving to a shelter.
  • Avoid shelter locations with glass windows, shelves, and heavy equipment.
  • Sit close to corridor walls and cover your head and face with your arms.
  • If outdoors, move quickly to the ground floor of a building or seek refuge in a ditch. Always avoid power or utility lines and trees as they can be energized.
  • If in an automobile, stop in the safest place available, preferably away from power lines and trees. Stop as quickly as safety permits; exit the vehicle for appropriate shelter.

After the storm passes, evaluate the situation and, if emergency help is necessary, call Campus Safety at 864-872-4050. Campus Safety will also send an All-CLEAR message via Rave.

For students who are on campus, essential services such as dining services and campus security will be available. However, please follow the guidelines from PC Residence Life staff.

Ensure that you have saved the Campus Safety phone number in your cell phone – 864-872-4050 and contact them immediately if there is an emergency.
