David Belk Cannon Foundation

David Belk Cannon Foundation

Belk family members and Belk stores in South Carolina and Georgia funded the construction of Belk Auditorium in 1960. They named the iconic building in honor of William Henry Belk, the founder of Belk department stores.

PC’s music department calls Belk Auditorium home, and, each year, graduating seniors file into Belk the day before commencement for their baccalaureate service.

The philanthropy of David Belk Cannon, the grandson of Dr. John Belk, has helped renovate the 58-year-old building. Cannon served as director and officer of Matthews Belk department stores for 38 years, until his death in 1998.

Cannon lived with the same values the Belks are known for: hard work, commitment, religious faith, and generosity. He made it possible for many students in need to afford college, and he helped children in need by giving to the Salvation Army.

After his death, Cannon’s estate created the David Belk Cannon Foundation to continue to support causes that Cannon believed in. The gift to Presbyterian College continues the Belk family legacy to help students achieve their educational goals.
